"In the hearts of the people, may the memory of those who made the supreme sacrifice live forever." This inscription, which we remember this Memorial Day, is found on the Evanston War Memorial in Patriot's Park at the intersection of Forest Place, Davis Street, and Sheridan Road. The memorial was erected in 1929 by the Daughters of the American Revolution to honor those who list their lives serving in the Spanish-American War, the Civil War, and World War I. The bronze relief sculpture was done by artist Stephen Beames, and was the first war memorial and first public art project in Evanston. The list of honored war dead includes two women: Frances Poole, and Helen Wood, both nurses in World War I. (fb)
