United Lodge of Theosophists
The United Lodge of Theosophists (ULT) is an informal, wholly voluntary association of students of Theosophy, founded in 1909 by Robert Crosbie in Los Angeles, California. It emerged as a part of the Theosophical Movement initiated by H.P. Blavatsky and Henry S. Olcott in New York in 1875, but distinguished itself by its adherence to the original, unaltered teachings of Blavatsky and her co-founder William Q. Judge.
History
The ULT was established in response to the organizational and ideological divisions within the Theosophical Society. Robert Crosbie, along with a few like-minded individuals, sought to return the focus to the foundational teachings without the encumbrances of organizational structures or authoritative figures. The ULT's primary aim is to disseminate the principles of Theosophy purely and without deviation from the original texts.
Philosophy
The ULT emphasizes self-reliance and the absence of organizational hierarchy, with no constitution, by-laws, or formal officers. Its members are referred to as "students" rather than followers or devotees, reflecting the organization's emphasis on individual study and self-directed learning. The ULT focuses on the fundamental teachings found in the works of Blavatsky and Judge, rejecting external authorities or teachers.
Mission
The mission of the ULT is to spread the teachings of Theosophy as outlined by Blavatsky and Judge, aiming to encourage a deeper understanding and realization of the true self. The organization does not seek to enlarge its membership but rather to inspire a broader understanding of Theosophical principles, which it believes can "leaven the mind of humanity."
Operations
The ULT operates through a network of lodges and study groups worldwide. It publishes several periodicals, including Theosophy Magazine, Theosophical Movement Magazine, and Vidya, each contributing to the dissemination of Theosophical teachings. The organization also engages in publishing original texts by Blavatsky and Judge, maintaining their integrity and availability for study.
Affiliations
The ULT is one of several prominent Theosophical organizations in the United States, alongside the Theosophical Society in America and the Theosophical Society Pasadena. While it maintains its independence and distinct philosophical stance, the ULT collaborates cordially with other Theosophical groups in fostering the broader aims of the Theosophical Movement.
Tax Status
The United Lodge of Theosophists is recognized as a nonprofit organization with an Employer Identification Number (EIN) of 236004879.
