Description

Trout Unlimited

Trout Unlimited (TU) is a US non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation of freshwater streams, rivers, and associated upland habitats for trout, salmon, other aquatic species, and people.

Formation and History

Trout Unlimited was founded in 1959 along the banks of Michigan's Au Sable River by a group of 16 anglers interested in protecting trout in popular fishing rivers. Notable founders included Art Neumann and George Griffith. The first president was Dr. Casey E. Westell Jr, with Art Neumann serving as the first vice president.

Mission and Vision

The mission of Trout Unlimited is to bring together diverse interests to care for and recover rivers and streams, ensuring that future generations can experience the joy of wild and native trout and salmon. The organization envisions communities across America engaging in the work of repairing and renewing watersheds.

Activities and Conservation Efforts

Trout Unlimited undertakes various projects, programs, and awareness campaigns both at the volunteer and staff levels. Key activities include:

  • Stream Restoration: Focusing on improving habitat for trout and other cold-water species by planting trees, strategically adding cover like boulders, and removing barriers to fish passage.
  • Advocacy: Advocating on issues affecting cold-water fisheries, such as opposing harmful mining projects and supporting federal land protection efforts.
  • Education and Community Engagement: Offering educational programs, group fishing outings, and outreach activities for youth, women, and veterans.

Organization Structure and Impact

Trout Unlimited operates with local chapters across nearly every state in the U.S. and has more than 300,000 members and supporters, although some figures report around 150,000 formal members. It has a significant annual budget and a strong presence in conservation advocacy, with achievements such as passing state and federal laws to protect rivers.

Scientific Underpinnings

Trout Unlimited uses scientific tools like the Conservation Success Index to prioritize conservation efforts. It collaborates with stakeholders including landowners, agencies, and other non-profits to achieve its goals.
