RTCA Chaplains serve all people involved in the horse racing industry nationwide. Most chaplains have a group of volunteer Board Members and non-Board Members alike that assist the Chaplains in accomplishing the goal of sharing the gospel with the horse racing community by earning the right to speak to their lives by creating social, education, recreational and spiritual programs.Even though the resources sometimes are limited, we do have supporters in and outside the industry that help us to accomplish our goals. They support the ministry with prayers, with their time, talent and treasures. As a result, lives are been touched in one way or another. Race Track Chaplaincy of America Inc

Overview

Race Track Chaplaincy of America Inc (RTCA) is an evangelical, interdenominational, non-profit Christian organization founded to serve the spiritual, emotional, physical, social, and educational needs of workers within the horse racing industry. Established with a vision to spread God's grace throughout this sector, RTCA has grown into a network of chaplains and volunteers dedicated to fulfilling its mission across numerous race tracks in the United States.

History

The Race Track Chaplaincy of America was initiated by Salty Roberts, a backstretch worker from South Carolina. In 1970, Roberts collaborated with Al Dawson, the missions director for the Florida Southern Baptist Convention, to introduce the concept of on-site church services at race tracks. The first service was held at Gulfstream Park in a makeshift chapel, marking the beginning of RTCA's ministry. Following Salty Roberts' passing in 2017, the organization has continued to grow under the guidance of its network of chaplains and volunteers.

Mission and Activities

RTCA focuses on five key areas of service:

  • Emotional Support: Providing emotional care and counseling.
  • Physical Support: Assisting with basic needs such as food and clothing.
  • Social Support: Promoting community through activities and gatherings.
  • Educational Support: Offering workshops and educational programs.
  • Spiritual Support: Conducting Bible studies, worship services, and providing biblically-based counseling.

The organization aims to make disciples for Jesus Christ through teaching and preaching the Gospel. Its chaplains are committed to sharing the love of Christ by ministering to everyone involved in the horse racing industry, which employs over 450,000 people in the United States. Many of these workers have non-traditional schedules that prevent them from attending traditional church services, making RTCA's outreach particularly vital.

Impact

RTCA's Christ-centered work has positively impacted thousands across the horse racing industry. Its initiatives include food and clothing distribution, healthcare and financial referrals, recreational activities, and educational workshops. The organization also provides transportation and other essential services, reflecting Jesus' teachings to love one's neighbors as oneself. RTCA's volunteers and chaplains strive to build a supportive community within the racing industry by bringing the church to those who may not have access to it otherwise.

Governance

As a non-profit organization, RTCA adheres to ethical governance practices, including regular assessments of its leadership and conflict-of-interest reviews. Its board ensures an inclusive recruitment process to maintain diversity and effective leadership.

By serving God and serving people, RTCA strives to create a network of love and support that extends from the backstretch to the boardroom, fostering a sense of community and spiritual growth within the horse racing industry.
