The concept of Crime Stoppers was first implemented by Detective Greg MacAleese in Albuquerque, New Mexico, following the murder of a young college student, Michael Carmen, in 1976. This pioneering effort inspired a nationwide movement, including the establishment of Michiana Crime Stoppers. The program was brought to South Bend after Police Captain Ed Friend observed its success in Rockford, Illinois[3].

Michiana Crime Stoppers operates through a combination of donations, fundraising, and partnerships with local businesses. It is recognized as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, relying on community support to fund its operations and reward system.
