Perinatal Foundation for the Deaf - Home

Perinatal Foundation for the Deaf educates deaf families in culturally appropriate milieu using American Sign Language, to ensure healthy pregnancies and births; and parents knowledgeable in parenting skills to achieve physically, emotionally and mentally healthy children for a sound start in life. Registered Nurses visit deaf parents in their homes answering any and all questions and debunking any misunderstandings due to lack of interpreters at medical appointments or the language barrier among family members ignorant of the language of the Deaf. Developmental Assessments are performed on young children regularly and referrals to specialists are made as needed. Visits continue until the youngest child is five years of age to ensure the physical and emotional health of the family as a whole.Hospital and clinic personnel are provided with presentations and in depth information on how to best communicate with the Deaf.Perinatal Foundation for the Deaf provides services for all of Los Angeles County, and parts of Ventura, San Gabriel, Orange and Riverside Counties. Perinatal Foundation for the Deaf provides inservice workshops and presentations for hospital and clinic personnel on how to best relate to their deaf patients. We also provide services for pregnant mothers in determining the prenatal health of their baby through chorionic villous sampling CVS tests to determine possible risk of deafness or other natal abnormalities. Doctors nurses physical and occupational therapists lab technicians and other members of the medical community can network with Perinatal Foundation for the Deaf to get answers for questions regarding deaf culture and federal law information governing interactions with the deaf. Understanding encourages teamwork and harmony.
