International Order of the Rainbow for Girls
Overview
The International Order of the Rainbow for Girls (IORG) is a Masonic youth service organization dedicated to providing leadership training through community service for young women. It was founded in 1922 by Reverend William Mark Sexson, a Christian minister and a 33Β° Mason, in McAlester, Oklahoma. Originally, the organization primarily catered to daughters of Masons and their friends, but it is now open to all girls aged 11 to 20 who believe in a Supreme Being, regardless of Masonic affiliation.
History
The first initiation of the IORG took place on April 6, 1922, in the Scottish Rite Temple in McAlester, Oklahoma, where 171 young women were initiated into the Order[1][2]. The organization was inspired by the Order of DeMolay, which provided similar experiences for young men. Rev. Sexson was asked to address South McAlester Chapter #149, Order of the Eastern Star, and following this engagement, he developed the ritual for the Rainbow Girls[1][3].
Purpose and Activities
The IORG aims to foster qualities such as leadership, charity, and community service in its members. The organization is structured around seven bow stations, each representing a colorful virtue: Love, Religion, Nature, Immortality, Fidelity, Patriotism, and Service. Additionally, it emphasizes the values of Faith, Hope, and Charity[3]. Members participate in various community service projects throughout the year, with a focus on benefiting their local communities[2][4].
Structure
The IORG has more than 850 assemblies worldwide, located in 46 U.S. states and several countries including Aruba, Australia, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Italy, Mexico, Paraguay, Philippines, and Romania[2][5]. The assemblies are typically organized at the local level, with guidance from adult advisors.
Membership Eligibility
Membership is open to young women between the ages of 11 and 20 who believe in a Supreme Being. Initial membership requirements have evolved over time, and no religious or Masonic affiliation is now necessary[3][5]. The organization also offers a "Pledge" program for younger girls, aged 6 to 10, to familiarize them with Rainbow ceremonies and activities[2].
Leadership and Governance
The IORG operates under a supreme governing body formed by Rev. Sexson in June 1922. This body oversees the organization's policies and procedures. The headquarters of the organization is located in McAlester, Oklahoma[1][2].
Legacy and Impact
The International Order of the Rainbow for Girls has grown significantly since its inception, becoming a global organization that emphasizes the development of young women through service, leadership, and moral values. Its impact can be seen in the numerous community service projects and the character-building experiences it offers its members.
