Free & Accepted Masons of Nebraska

The Free & Accepted Masons of Nebraska, more formally known as the Grand Lodge of Ancient, Free and Accepted Masons of Nebraska, is a prominent fraternal organization within the state. This body oversees and governs the various Masonic Lodges across Nebraska.

History

Freemasonry first arrived in the Nebraska Territory with pioneering settlers in the 1850s. Key milestones include the establishment of Bellevue Lodge (April 1855), Giddings Lodge in Nebraska City (May 1855 dispensation), and Capitol Lodge in Omaha (January 1857 dispensation) [1][4]. These three Lodges—Nebraska Lodge #1, Western Star Lodge #2, and Capitol Lodge #3—formed the Grand Lodge of Nebraska on September 23, 1857, with Robert C. Jordan as its first Grand Master [3][4].

Structure and Purpose

The organization is headquartered in Lincoln, Nebraska, and is one of two governing bodies for Freemasonry in the state, alongside the Prince Hall Mason Grand Lodge of Nebraska [3]. Freemasonry in Nebraska aims to promote friendship, morality, and brotherly love among its members, drawing men from diverse backgrounds [2]. It seeks to make "good men better" by emphasizing universal truths through architectural and geometric symbolism [2].

Notable Freemasons from Nebraska

Notable members include William Jennings Bryan (Lincoln Lodge #19), William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody (Platte Valley Lodge #32), and John J. Pershing (Lincoln Lodge #19) [3].

Activities and Impact

The organization supports various community initiatives and fraternal activities. It plays a significant role in fostering community harmony and personal development among its members [2].
