West Baton Rouge Historical Association

The West Baton Rouge Historical Association is a nonprofit organization founded in 1968 by seven dedicated women, with Mrs. Ethel Claiborne Dameron playing a key role in its conception. The association was established to promote an interest in history, particularly the history of West Baton Rouge Parish in Louisiana[1][5].

Mission and Purpose

The primary mission of the association is to foster awareness and appreciation for the historical heritage of West Baton Rouge Parish. This is achieved through various activities such as research, collections, and exhibitions. The association operates with the goal of educating the public about the local culture and historical events that have shaped the community[5].

Structure and Activities

The West Baton Rouge Historical Association is a 501(c)(3) organization, incorporated for educational and literary purposes. It supports the operation of the West Baton Rouge Museum, which serves as a keepsake museum for the parish and showcases its rich history. The museum features exhibits on topics such as sugar plantations, local culture, and historic buildings[4][2].

Impact on West Baton Rouge Parish

The association has contributed significantly to preserving the cultural and historical heritage of West Baton Rouge Parish. Through its efforts, various sites of historical and cultural interest in the parish have been recognized and documented, including those listed on the National Register of Historic Places and others marked by informative historic markers[1]. The association's work helps maintain a sense of community and tradition in the region by organizing local events and promoting historical awareness[3].
