The Grauer School's Middle School Expedition Highlight: First Aid Skills Training Lessons During Spring Expeditions week at The Grauer School, all of our students traveled in California and around the world. We're sharing a few of the special moments from our expeditions, where our students were able to "Learn by Discovery®" through their experiences. From Patricia Young, Middle School Expedition Leader: One of the featured activities on the Middle School's First Aid Rescue Adventure expedition was for our students to learn important wilderness first aid skills, and understand how important those skills could be in an emergency situation. The first aid training lessons took place on Wednesday, with students first learning CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation), which is recommended for patients who are unresponsive with no breathing or abnormal breathing. Students also worked through rotations on bandaging, splinting, and rescue protocols including the use of cervical collars and transporting people via backboards. It was quite a scene watching everyone practice appropriate protocols for dragging or lifting injured victims. I was impressed and proud of our students as they worked together in teams to communicate and clearly take care of the assigned victims after simulated rescues. The first aid training culminated in a simulated plane crash event, with next-level effects, including smoke, flares, Hollywood-style makeup, radio teams, and collaborative rescue work with reflection and sharing of both the rescued and the rescuer experience of the event. This was the kind of experience the kids will be telling their kids about. When saying good night to the students, it was the stand-out winner as the highlight of the day! #grauerschool #grauerexpeditionarylearning #spring2025expeditions #middleschoolexpedition #firstaidrescueadventure #unforgettablemoments #wildernessfirstaid #firstaidskills #cprlessons #bandagesandsplints #simulatedrescues #collaborativerescue # #globalcitizens #grauercommunity (fb)

The Grauer School's Mammoth Mountain Expedition: Visiting Manzanar Internment Camp During Spring Expeditions week at The Grauer School, all of our students traveled in California and around the world. We're sharing a few of the special moments from our expeditions, where our students were able to "Learn by Discovery®" through their experiences. From Clayton Payne, Mammoth Expedition Leader: Jessi Brown and I took a group of students to tour the Manzanar Japanese Internment Camp, which is a national historic site run by the National Park Service. In 1942, the United States government ordered more than 110,000 men, women, and children to leave their homes and detained them in remote, military-style camps. The Manzanar War Relocation Center was one of ten camps where the US government incarcerated Japanese immigrants ineligible for citizenship and Japanese American citizens during World War II. This was a place I had always hoped to visit, and we were impressed by the depth and care of each and every educational display. Students were clearly moved, and were somber in their reflections of how something like this came to pass. I was impressed by how some of the students made connections between this point in history and decisions that are being made at the Federal level today. Jessi added, "Although we were able to walk through the various re-created buildings that represented life in the barracks, the mess hall, and the school house, the main museum was closed due to federal cuts to the National Park Service. The students carefully read the placards about life in the camp, listened to recorded testimonials, and pondered whether something like this could ever happen again in the United States. They also noticed how isolated and desolate it was, how susceptible to drought or fire it must have been, and how hopeless and demoralizing the experience must have felt." #grauerschool #grauerexpeditionarylearning #spring2025expeditions #mammothmountainexpedition #unforgettablemoments #historycomestolife #manzanarinternmentcamp #manzanarwarrelocationcenter #historicsite #worldwar2history #connectionswithcurrentdecisions #neverforget #globalcitizens #grauercommunity (fb)
