Sigma Alpha Sorority

Sigma Alpha Sorority is a U.S. nonprofit organization and a professional agricultural sorority that promotes scholarship, leadership, service, and fellowship among its members.

History

Founded on January 26, 1978, at Ohio State University by Marilyn Burns, Cindie Davis, Amy Matthews, Ann Huling Mathews, and Jennifer McMillan, Sigma Alpha was established as an alternative to traditional Greek sorority systems. It aimed to support women pursuing careers in agriculture.

Objective and Pillars

The sorority's objective is to promote its members in all facets of agriculture and strengthen bonds of friendship. Its pillars are Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Fellowship. Members strive for academic excellence, leadership development, community service, and fostering lifelong bonds.

Philanthropy

Sigma Alpha's national philanthropy is Agriculture in the Community, which focuses on spreading awareness and education about agriculture. Members engage in community gardening, farmers' markets, and collaborations with organizations like 4-H and FFA.

Membership and Chapters

Over 20,000 women have been initiated into Sigma Alpha, with chapters across the United States. The organization supports collegiate and alumnae members, providing opportunities for professional development and networking.

Symbols and Traditions

The sorority's colors are emerald and maize, with the yellow chrysanthemum as its flower and the emerald as its jewel. The mascot is a baby bull.

Professional Affiliations

Sigma Alpha is a member of the Professional Fraternity Association and the Consortium of Collegiate Agricultural Organizations. It is also affiliated with American Agri-Women.
