American Society of Civil Engineers
The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) is a tax-exempt professional organization founded on November 5, 1852. It is the oldest national engineering society in the United States, dedicated to the advancement of the science and profession of civil engineering, and the enhancement of human welfare through its activities.
Purpose and Activities
ASCE focuses on advancing professional knowledge and improving the practice of civil engineering to serve humanity. It facilitates the development of technology, encourages lifelong learning, promotes professionalism, and supports civil engineers worldwide. The society provides essential value to its members, their careers, partners, and the public.
Membership and Reach
ASCE has more than 143,000 members in 177 countries, making it a global network of civil engineers. Its membership includes professionals in private practice, government, industry, and academia.
Structure and Programs
ASCE operates through several specialized institutes, which cater to different fields within civil engineering:
- Architectural Engineering Institute (AEI)
- Coasts, Oceans, Ports and Rivers Institute (COPRI)
- Construction Institute (CI)
- Engineering Mechanics Institute (EMI)
- Environmental and Water Resources Institute (EWRI)
- Geo-Institute (G-I)
- Transportation and Development Institute (T&DI)
- Structural Engineering Institute (SEI)
- Utility Engineering & Surveying Institute (UESI)
These institutes support working professionals by advancing technical specialties in civil engineering.
Advocacy and Publications
One of ASCE's prominent roles is advocating for infrastructure care and improvement. The organization releases periodic infrastructure report cards, evaluating the condition of U.S. infrastructure and providing recommendations for improvements. The ASCE is also a leading publisher of civil engineering information globally.
Financials and Governance
In recent years, ASCE has reported significant revenues and maintains an endowment to support its activities. The organization is governed by a board of directors and has a president who oversees its operations. ASCE's leadership plays a crucial role in guiding its mission and strategic initiatives.
History
The formation of ASCE followed earlier attempts to organize civil engineers in the United States. The first notable effort was in the early 19th century, but these initial efforts did not succeed. However, the establishment of the Boston Society of Civil Engineers in 1848 laid groundwork for ASCE's founding. The organization's constitution was influenced by the Boston Society, and it was formally established in 1852 in New York. ASCE's early activities were temporarily suspended during the American Civil War but resumed and expanded over time.
