International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local Union 743

The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local Union 743 is a nonprofit organization that represents electrical workers and other related professionals in several counties of southeastern Pennsylvania. Chartered on May 7, 1918, the local was established by 14 original members in Reading, Pennsylvania[1][3].

History

Since its inception, Local 743 has played a significant role in improving working conditions and advocating for better wages and benefits for its members. Initially, the local faced challenges such as no standardized wage scale, with electrical workers being paid between 25 to 55 cents per hour. However, through collective bargaining and strikes, the union managed to implement a new wage scale and improve work conditions[1].

Over the years, Local 743 has expanded its reach to represent employees in Berks, Schuylkill, Lancaster, Chester, and Montgomery counties. The local's jurisdiction includes not only electricians but also communication workers, technicians, and public works employees in some townships[3].

Activities and Growth

Local 743 has been dedicated to providing quality training and education to its members, contributing to the growth and development of the electrical industry in southeastern Pennsylvania. The local has grown significantly from its original 14 members to over 600 members today[3].

In addition to its core union activities, Local 743 participates in community events and initiatives. For instance, members have been involved in volunteer work, such as renovating a former one-room schoolhouse in Berks County[3].

Leadership and Advocacy

IBEW Local 743 remains committed to its founding principles of improving working conditions, wages, and benefits for its members. The local continues to engage in organizing campaigns and contractual negotiations to ensure fair treatment for all workers within its jurisdiction. Through its strong membership and commitment to quality training, Local 743 maintains a prominent position in the labor landscape of southeastern Pennsylvania[3].
