Red Stocking Fund Inc

TO PROVIDE FOOD AND CLOTHING TO PERSONS IN NEED DURING THE CHRISTMAS SEASON.

Red Stocking Fund Inc.
Overview

The Red Stocking Fund Inc. is a nonprofit organization based in Edgartown, Massachusetts, with a mission to provide essential support to children in need on Martha's Vineyard, particularly during the holiday season.

History

The organization was founded in 1938 by Addie Crist, a resident of Vineyard Haven, who initiated the effort by gathering friends to knit six red stockings. These stockings were then filled with items intended for children, marking the beginning of the Red Stocking Fund's charitable work[2].

Mission and Activities

The Red Stocking Fund's primary objective is to provide warm winter clothing and food to children in need. Each year, the organization assists approximately 300 children during the holiday season. They focus on using donations efficiently, with ninety cents of every dollar spent on food and clothing, while the remainder covers essential operational expenses. Toys and books are typically donated, though specific donations may be earmarked for purchasing these items[1].

Operations and Governance

The Red Stocking Fund is entirely volunteer-run, making it reliant on community support for its operations. Despite challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, which affected in-person volunteer participation, the organization continues to rely on donations and volunteer efforts to meet its mission[1].

Financials

As of 2023, the Red Stocking Fund reported a revenue of $111,000 and expenses of $80,300. The organization holds total assets of $171,000 with no reported liabilities. They do not provide grants and instead focus on direct assistance to families in need[4][5].

Impact

The Red Stocking Fund plays a critical role in addressing the significant need on Martha's Vineyard by providing essential items to children during the holiday season. Its operation underscores the importance of community-driven initiatives in supporting local families facing economic challenges.
