Buddha, the compassionate one, I prostrate to you.” — Great Indian master Asanga Today, many followers of Buddha Shakyamuni are celebrating Vesak, the birthday of the #Buddha. Many ancient Indian masters wrote beautiful poems to remember the Buddha’s kindness and other qualities. The above verse has become widely cited to argue that as a Buddhist, we can be angry at the afflictions themselves, such as hatred, but not the person who is suffering from the affliction. As portrayed in this painting from our collection, Birth of Buddha, Buddhists believe that the Buddha had a miraculous birth under a tree in the Lumbini Grove in the eastern district of #Nepal. Buddhist scholars describe the Buddha’s birth as the beginning of a new era, marking a significant change in the Indic religious tradition. Most Indian religious traditions in the pre-Buddhist period believed in a divine creator.
