On Tuesday, May 20, the Wagner Society of New York awarded mezzo-soprano Sadie Cheslak the Robert Lauch Memorial Fund Award ($6,000) and tenor Alec Carlson the Ursula Springer Award ($3,000) following a final audition round held at Merkin Concert Hall. Encouragement grants of $1000 were extended to tenor Michael Deshield and soprano Allyson Bennett. Grants of $500 were made to soprano Lynnesha Crump, mezzo-soprano Kate Farrar, mezzo-soprano Ani Kushyan, soprano Danielle Lombardi, contralto Ema Mitrovic, soprano Celeste Morales, and bass-baritone Johannes Schwarz. Our special guest judge was the distinguished Wagnerian soprano and vocal teacher, Jane Eaglen. The adjucation panel also included Cori Ellison, co-Chair of the WSNY's Singer's Committee; Tyson Deaton, co-Chair of the WSNY's Singer's Committee; Deborah Surdi; Ken Benson; Roger Malouf. Applications were received from singers worldwide, including from the United States, Canada, Germany, the Czech Republic, and Georgia. After a thorough evaluation, twelve singers were selected participate in the final round. The Society looks forward to presenting Sadie Cheslak in a recital in New York in Winter 2025. The recital takes place in Victor Borge Hall in Scandinavia House, 58 Park Ave. between E 37th and E 38th Streets, and is wheelchair accessible. The winner of the 2024 Lauch Memorial Award from the Wagner Society of New York, tenor Shawn Roth is a promising and exciting young artist. He has upcoming performances as Heinrich der Schreiber in Tannhäuser, Pašek in The Cunning Little Vixen, and covers as Tony in West Side Story, Don José in Carmen, and Erik in Der fliegende Holländer.
