Color, Mood, Magic ✨ What if you didn’t just paint a landscape—what if you could paint the feeling of a landscape? This week, fifth graders were invited to do just that. Ms. Edna Emmett, beloved retired teacher who taught art at WSB for more than 30 years, returned to the classroom with jars of pigment, soaking paper, and a gentle challenge: to explore how color can carry feeling—not just form. In Waldorf education, students begin working with wet-on-wet watercolor in their earliest years. But instead of outgrowing it, they grow further into it. With Ms. Emmett’s guidance, the class stepped into a painting lesson inspired by their main lesson block on Ancient Egypt. But before a single pyramid or line appeared, they were asked to find the feeling of the scene, through color. A golden yellow wash captured the brilliance of desert light. A deeper yellow followed, evoking the scorching heat of sun-baked earth. Then came bold oranges—for the pulsing sun overhead, and the mighty pyramids themselves. As red touched the paper, something shifted. The pyramids seemed to rise. Ms. Emmett explained how some colors recede while others—like red—advance, creating energy and presence. She spoke of “color mood,” helping students feel how certain hues carry emotion, story, even temperature. Together, they discovered how red and yellow—when combined—become colors of power and intensity: hot, bold, alive. It was a painting lesson, yes—but also a lesson in awareness, in perception, and in how color invites us not just to depict the world, but to truly experience it. Head, Heart, Hands. (fb)
