Overview

The Charlevoix Historical Society is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and celebrating the history of Charlevoix, Michigan. Founded in November 1879, the society has undergone several periods of activity, with a recent reorganization in 1972 aimed at revitalizing its mission. It was recognized as a 501(c)(3) organization in 1986.

  • Values:
    • Accessibility: Providing programs and events for a broad audience and making historical archives and structures accessible.
    • Authenticity: Serving as a primary source of information on Charlevoix history.

Programs and Activities

The society offers various programs throughout the year focused on local history. These programs are funded by donations, membership dues, and user fees. A quarterly newsletter and semi-monthly eNewsletter keep members informed about events and activities.

Museums

The Charlevoix Historical Society operates two museums:

  • Museum at Harsha House: A restored Queen Anne-style home built in 1891, donated to the society in 1979. It houses rotating exhibits, photographs, documents, and artifacts related to local history. The museum also features a working 1917 player piano and artifacts such as Ernest Hemingway's original marriage license.

  • Charlevoix Depot Museum: Donated in 1992, the depot is a historic landmark used for events and programs. It is listed on the National and State Registers of Historic Places, part of the Charlevoix Historic District.

Funding and Development

The society has conducted significant fundraising efforts, including a capital campaign titled Embrace.Preserve.Cherish, which raised nearly $500,000 between 2017 and 2021. This funding supported major repairs and renovations at both museums.

Current Activities

The society continues to engage the community with historical experiences and educational programs, ensuring the preservation of Charlevoix's rich history for future generations.
