James Millikin Homestead, Inc.
The James Millikin Homestead, Inc. is a nonprofit organization established in 1975 in Decatur, Illinois, with the mission to restore and preserve the historic James Millikin House. This landmark, completed in 1876, is notable for its architectural significance and historical contributions to the community.
History
James Millikin, a prominent businessman in Decatur and founder of Millikin University, originally purchased the land for the homestead in 1862. Construction of the house began in 1875 under the direction of architect William Warren Boyington, and it was completed the following year. Built in the Italianate style with distinctive mansard roofs, the home reflects both Victorian and Second Empire architectural influences. The construction cost approximately $18,000, a considerable sum at the time, and the structure features rich interior decorations, including colored marble fireplaces and art glass windows.
Following James Millikin's death in 1909, his widow, Anna Millikin, continued to be active in community projects and supported the arts. Anna's will stipulated that the homestead be used as an art gallery and museum. The property remained under the guidance of trustees until 1942 when ownership transferred to Millikin University, which undertook its preservation and restoration.
Mission and Activities
The organization focuses on preserving the homestead's historical integrity while engaging the community through educational programs and events. In 2019, the mission statement was revised to reflect this commitment: "Through preservation of the Homestead, we engage, educate, and entertain visitors with the stories of the Millikins and Decatur."
James Millikin Homestead, Inc. conducts various fundraising activities to support ongoing restoration projects, which include the enhancement of interiors, such as ceiling and wall refurbishments, and maintenance of the building’s structural features. Notable recent projects include roof repairs and the restoration of a stained-glass window.
Community Engagement
The Homestead serves as a cultural hub, hosting numerous events, tours, and exhibitions that highlight the local history and the Millikin family's legacy. Volunteers play a crucial role in its operations, helping with tours, events, and general maintenance.
Recognition
The James Millikin Homestead is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, recognizing its significance as a preserved historic property within the region. The ongoing efforts of James Millikin Homestead, Inc. ensure that this architectural gem continues to educate and inspire future generations.
