Growing Stage Theatre for Young Audiences Inc.
Overview

The Growing Stage Theatre for Young Audiences Inc., also known as The Children’s Theatre of New Jersey, is a nonprofit professional performing arts center dedicated to engaging young audiences through theatre. As a member of Actors' Equity Association, the organization provides opportunities for individuals to participate in and learn from the arts.

History

Founded in 1982 by Executive Director Stephen L. Fredericks, The Growing Stage began its journey at the Black River Playhouse and the Williamson School in Chester, New Jersey. Over the years, it has grown into a prominent cultural fixture in northwestern Morris County. The company moved from its initial locations to the Williamson Building, where it spent ten years before finding a permanent home.

In the early years, The Growing Stage consisted of a small staff and volunteers who worked together to bring professional theatre to children and their families. The company also established a touring program that reached over a thousand students in its first year. By the late 1990s, The Growing Stage became an associate member of the New Jersey Theatre Group, a coalition of professional theaters in the state.

Facilities and Achievements

The Growing Stage is unique in New Jersey as it owns its own facility, The Palace Theatre, which it purchased and restored. The historic Palace features a 240-seat theatre, a balcony/art gallery with hand-painted murals, a modern concession area, rehearsal space, classrooms, and administrative offices[2]. In 2011, it was officially designated as the Children’s Theatre of New Jersey by the New Jersey State Senate[2].

Programs and Productions

The organization focuses on theatrical education programs designed to provide young people with the benefits of participating in the performing arts. Its productions include family-friendly shows that cater to both children and adults. Each season features a variety of main stage productions, often based on popular children's stories or literary works, such as Roald Dahl's "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer"[5].

Mission and Impact

The Growing Stage aims to nurture the development of the performing arts through education and create works that engage the entire family[1]. By offering a unique blend of entertainment and educational opportunities, the theater helps foster a love of the arts in young audiences and supports the community through internships and collaborations with local schools[2].

Funding and Support

The theatre relies on fundraising events and community support to maintain its programs. Events like the annual "Party at the Palace" help raise funds for artistic and educational programming, ensuring that the theatre remains accessible to a wide audience[3]. The organization has received notable grants from foundations such as The Shubert Foundation, supporting its operations and development[2].
