Don’t miss the opening of the 2025 annual End of Year Show next Wednesday, May 28 at 5pm! As part of the exhibition, be sure to check out the Foundation Building’s east side colonnade windows to see “The Cooper Union: A Work in Progress,” a block-long timeline celebrating the institution’s sustained position at the intersection of education and sociopolitical change for 165 years. From The Cooper Union’s founding in 1859, The Cooper Union has been the site of speeches that changed the course of history, a meeting place for political organizers, and a haven for some of the nation’s greatest activists. The timeline exhibition draws on four of Cooper’s archival repositories: The Cooper Union Archives & Special Collections, the Voices from the Great Hall digital platform, The Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture Archive, and the Herb Lubalin Center for Design and Typography. Together the materials in these collections chronicle historic moments of sociopolitical change and their connection to Cooper’s educational mission. The exhibition was also reproduced in a limited edition accordion-styled book (modeled in this collection by Professor and Curator David Gersten) that can be viewed at The Cooper Union Library. Work by School of Art sophomore Ryan Jang was selected to be shown as part of the NYCxDESIGN Souvenir Collection which was held in The Canvas Gallery at the Oculus; the annual exhibition features objects that redefine what is a souvenir. This year featured one-of-a-kind, collectible objects inspired by the energy and culture of New York City. Ryan, along with Solomon Choi, a recent Parsons School of Design graduate, were inspired to design a souvenir inspired by what is one of the most omnipresent structures of the city: scaffolding. With roughly 9,000 scaffolds across NYC, they fade into daily life. Their design reimagines scaffolding as a versatile vessel, usable as a pencil holder, flower vase, or magazine stand. Emphasizing its essence, the duo included an assembly process with aluminum pipes and 3D-printed joints, inviting users to take part in its construction. The show also featured a souvenir designed by Michael Bambino, an adjunct instructor of mechanical engineering. Per NYCxD, ”nothing says New York like a street rat” and Bambino created a life-sized candle saluting the city’s most infamous resident. (fb)
