Tejon Ranch Conservancy
Introduction
The Tejon Ranch Conservancy is an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit land trust dedicated to preserving, enhancing, and restoring the native biodiversity and ecosystem values of Tejon Ranch in California. The Conservancy was established through the Tejon Ranch Conservation and Land Use Agreement signed on June 17, 2008, by the Tejon Ranch Company.
Mission
The mission of the Tejon Ranch Conservancy is to preserve, enhance, and restore the biodiversity and ecosystem values of the Tejon Ranch and Tehachapi Range for the benefit of California’s future generations. This involves managing and overseeing conservation planning and protection of the conserved lands.
Conservation Efforts
Tejon Ranch is the largest contiguous private property in California, spanning 270,000 acres and located at the convergence of four major ecological regions: the Great Central Valley, Sierra Nevada, Mojave Desert, and Southwestern California. The ranch provides a crucial corridor for wildlife movement between extensive tracts of protected lands. The Conservancy works to conserve and study a diverse range of flora and fauna found on the ranch, including over 200 species of birds and more than 60 at-risk plant and animal species.
Stewardship and Research
With 240,000 acres under its care, the Conservancy manages one of California's largest and most historic working cattle ranches. Beyond land management, the Conservancy is involved in research, education, and exploration, aiming to apply the best available conservation science to protect and enhance biodiversity. It collaborates with leading universities and conservation groups to inform management decisions and advance conservation efforts in the region.
Governance and Partnerships
The Conservancy operates independently, maintaining its integrity while engaging in collaborations with various stakeholders. Its board includes representatives from organizations such as the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), Sequoia Riverlands Trust, and Barrington Partners, reflecting a diverse range of perspectives in conservation and land management. The organization values transparency and collaboration in its efforts.
Public Engagement
The Tejon Ranch Conservancy offers public access activities and environmental education programs, encouraging community involvement in protecting and preserving California's natural heritage. These efforts aim to foster a broader understanding of conservation needs and engage the public in supporting the preservation of unique ecosystems.
