Oregon Tech recently welcomed a group of junior high students from Brixner Junior High for a visit. Brixner special education teacher TeLana Burns brought eight students and five adults to campus with the goal of exposing students to local college and career pathways. The visit included hands-on activities like Lego bridge building and conversations about civil engineering and the Steel Bridge Competition. Students also participated in interactive science demonstrations led by Assistant Professor of Chemistry Travis Owen, Ph.D. “We engaged in interactive demonstrations exploring the topics of electricity generation, electromagnetic properties, centripetal force, electrical conductivity, gas behavior and acid-base chemistry. The students had an opportunity to experience amazing science phenomena first-hand!” -Dr. Owen The visit was organized by Mary-Jane Owen, Associate Director of Educational Partnerships and Outreach (EPO). EPO supports pre-college programming by connecting young students with learning opportunities at Oregon Tech. “We are always excited to curate special visits for schools and students. Providing exposure to Oregon's Polytechnic Institution to elementary, middle, and junior high school students is a priority for EPO,” Mary-Jane shared. (fb)
