Robert Packer Hospital

Robert Packer Hospital, now known as Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital, is a non-profit teaching hospital located in Sayre, Pennsylvania. Founded in 1885, it is the oldest hospital serving the Twin Tiers region of Pennsylvania and New York. Today, it operates as a flagship tertiary referral center within the Guthrie integrated health care system.

History

The hospital was established in response to the health care needs of workers in the Sayre railroad yard. Its early history marked significant milestones, including the addition of its first intern in 1887, a time when internships were not common practice for physicians. The hospital began its first residency program in general surgery in 1923, in partnership with the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Medicine, followed by a residency in medicine five years later.

In 1910, Dr. Donald Guthrie arrived and expanded the hospital's services, modeling them after the Mayo Clinic, where he had completed his residency. Under his leadership, the Guthrie Medical Group was formed, and significant advancements were made to the hospital's facilities and services.

A major fire in 1933 led to a significant rebuilding effort, with the new structure opening in 1934. This period marked the beginning of a series of expansions, including new buildings and operating suites.
