As a student recruitment director, Craig Berry is used to talking about the Xavier difference. But today, we get to talk about the difference Berry’s made at Xavier. In addition to working in the Office of Undergraduate Admission, this economics major’s been the vice president of Gentlemen Organized for Achievement in Leadership (GOAL), a mentor in the Smooth Transition program and a member of the Dean's Student Advisory Board for the Williams College of Business. “When I came on my tour, I initially came in as an international business major, and what I heard when we were walking through Smith [Hall] honestly blew me away. I got to sit in a mock class, and I loved it” “I came in overly ambitious. I joined a lot of clubs, took a lot of credits, and was doing a lot. I got involved with as many things as I could, and I reached a point where I was stretching myself thin … So, I had to understand that college is about more than just classes; it’s also about time management. You have three parts of your life: academic, social, and extracurricular, and knowing how to balance all of them is a challenge. Over time, I worked on it and got to a workload that helped me manage all three aspects.” “My junior year, I took The Theology of Malcolm X with Kayla Wheeler, Assistant Professor in the Gender and Diversity Studies Program. It was one of my favorite classes because it changed the way I think about things. Not only because of the content of the class, but it also helped me realize — and Xavier does a really good job of this overall — that everyone is different and comes from different upbringings and ways of life. You have to understand that your perspective or privileges might not be accessible to everyone. Being aware of that as you maneuver through the world professionally taught me how to deal with everyone. “ “I want to go into law, and Xavier has definitely taught me to work with and understand others. In law, I’m going to need to be adaptable, walk into any room, and be heard and understood. I think Xavier has done a very good job of making sure that I'm well equipped no matter what room I go into. I can talk to people, communicate and make a difference.” (fb)
