America's Oldest Cultural Heritage Institution. The Library Company, founded by Benjamin Franklin in 1731, is America's oldest cultural institution. It is today an independent research library with over half a million rare books, manuscripts, prints, photographs, ephemera, and art and artifacts documenting every aspect of American history and culture from its beginnings through the end of the 19th century. The Library Company's mission is to preserve, make available, augment, and interpret its collections to a wide audience.
