Happy Fun Fact Friday!!! 🥊 California Condors versus Turkey Vultures 🥊 Did you know California condors have a poor sense of smell and rely on their exceptional eyesight to locate food? Condors are scavengers, preferring large mammal carcasses, and often follow other scavengers like ravens, eagles, or turkey vultures to find potential food sources. Once found, condors may eat up to 3 or 4 pounds of food at a time, roughly a 1/5 of their body weight, and then may not eat again for several days. Condors also lack an open nare space, which is positioned on the upper mandible. Turkey vultures possess a remarkably acute sense of smell, enabling them to locate carrion from distances several miles away. This exceptional olfactory ability is crucial for their scavenging lifestyle, allowing them to detect decaying animals even through dense vegetation. Turkey vultures have a large nare opening, positioned on top of the mandible with a space large enough to see through; allowing the ability to smell at such a distance.
