Kappa Delta Pi

Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society in Education (ΚΔΠ) is an American honor society established to promote excellence in the field of education. Founded on March 8, 1911, at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Kappa Delta Pi is one of the esteemed organizations dedicated to fostering academic integrity and professional development among educators.

History

Kappa Delta Pi originated from the Illinois Education Club, which was established in 1909 by Dr. William Begley. Initially affiliated with Pi Kappa Mu, the club withdrew when it faced the prospect of losing its coeducational status due to a merger. In response, the club's members created Kappa Delta Pi as a national honorary educational fraternity to provide fellowship for education students.

The first chapter, known as Alpha, was established at the University of Illinois. The organization rapidly expanded, with the second chapter, Beta, founded at the University of Colorado in 1912, followed by additional chapters at the University of Oklahoma and the University of Texas in subsequent years. Kappa Delta Pi was officially registered in Illinois in June 1911.

By 1930, the organization had chartered 62 chapters, and it transitioned from being known as a fraternity to a society in 1932. The society has published The Educational Forum since 1936, focusing on educational research and scholarship.

Membership

Kappa Delta Pi membership is by invitation only and is extended to undergraduate and graduate education students who meet specific academic criteria. Members benefit from a lifelong association with a network of educators dedicated to enhancing the teaching profession.

As of 2025, Kappa Delta Pi boasts over 20,000 active members and has initiated more than one million lifetime members. The society has also established more than 860 chapters across various educational institutions, with 543 active collegiate chapters and additional professional or alumni chapters.

Activities and Programs

The society emphasizes leadership, scholarship, and service in education. Local chapters organize events that encourage networking, professional development, and community service. Additionally, Kappa Delta Pi engages in fundraising efforts to support educational programs and initiatives that align with its mission.

Governance

Kappa Delta Pi is governed by an executive council composed of nine elected members, chosen by chapter delegates during the society’s biennial national convention. The headquarters of Kappa Delta Pi is located in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Laureates

Since its inception, Kappa Delta Pi has recognized outstanding educators through its Laureate Chapter. This honor celebrates individuals who have made significant contributions to the development of education. Notable laureates include social reformers and scholars who have shaped the educational landscape in various ways.
