Locally, we have witnessed a troubling rise in older adults experiencing homelessness. According to our end-of-year data, the number of guests aged 60 and older staying in our individual shelters has doubled over the past decade—from 163 elders in Fiscal Year 2014 to 324 elders in Fiscal Year 2024. A decade ago, older adults made up just 8% of our individual shelter population. Today, they represent 17%—a stark reflection of how the aging crisis is taking hold right here in Southeastern Massachusetts. (fb)
