👻✨ Did the Legend of the Headless Horseman Start in New Jersey? 🐎💨 Picture this: It’s a cold, foggy night in the heart of the Revolutionary War. 🌫️❄️ In a skirmish between a group of Hessians and an American patrol near White’s Tavern in Basking Ridge, a Hessian soldier is decapitated by a cannonball. But that’s not where the story ends... Legend says that, even after losing his head, the soldier’s body mounted his horse and rode off—disappearing into the eerie shadows of the Great Swamp in Morristown. 🐎🌌 For centuries, locals whispered of a blood-drenched horse and a headless rider galloping through the misty wetlands at night. Some say this haunting figure still roams the swamp, looking to reclaim his lost head... 👀 Here’s where it gets interesting: Could it be that Washington Irving heard this chilling tale during his time researching George Washington in Morristown? 🤔 And could this New Jersey legend have inspired The Legend of Sleepy Hollow—the story that made the Headless Horseman famous? 📚🕯️ While Sleepy Hollow, NY, may now claim the Horseman as its own, it does make you wonder... Did the spooky tale of the Headless Horseman first ride through the haunted swamps of the Garden State? 🌲💨 Whether history or legend, one thing is certain: If you ever find yourself alone near the Great Swamp on a misty autumn night... and you hear the distant clip-clop of hooves… don’t look back. Just RUN. 🏃♀️🏃♂️ #Halloweekend #SleepyHollow #SpookyHistory (fb)
