Friends of Miami Marine Stadium Incorporated
Overview
Friends of Miami Marine Stadium Incorporated is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the restoration and revitalization of the Miami Marine Stadium. The group was formed in February 2008 under the administrative umbrella of the Dade Heritage Trust. Its mission is to work with the City of Miami and the broader community to restore the historic stadium to its former glory and ensure its operation in the public interest.
History and Advocacy
Since its inception, Friends of Miami Marine Stadium (FMMS) has been instrumental in securing historic designations for the stadium. The organization played a crucial role in Miami's Historic Preservation Board designating the stadium as a historic site. In 2009, the National Trust for Historic Preservation included the Miami Marine Stadium on its list of America's 11 Most Endangered Historic Places, highlighting the urgent need for its preservation. The World Monuments Fund also listed it among significant endangered sites in 2010.
FMMS has worked closely with various entities, including the Miami City Commission and the Miami Sports and Exhibition Authority. In January 2012, an agreement was reached for a business plan that would restore the stadium as a popular entertainment venue. The organization has invested over $600,000 in its efforts and has received its 501(c)(3) designation, allowing it to operate as a tax-exempt charity.
Restoration Efforts
In 2016, the Miami City Commission authorized up to $45 million in revenue bonds for the restoration of the stadium. Although the bond authorization has expired, ongoing efforts involve seeking new funding sources and partnerships to move forward with the restoration plans. The estimated cost of renovations has increased to $61 million, reflecting the challenges in progressing with the project.
Leadership and Support
The organization includes notable figures such as Hilario Candela, the original architect of the Miami Marine Stadium, who served in a leadership role. Gloria Estefan has also been a significant supporter, contributing through her charitable efforts to help bring the stadium back to life.
Current Status
Despite continuous advocacy and support from both local and national preservation groups, the renovation process remains slow. Friends of Miami Marine Stadium continues to push for the revitalization of this iconic venue, emphasizing its potential as a premier entertainment site on Biscayne Bay. The organization's work remains crucial in raising awareness and garnering support for the restoration of the Miami Marine Stadium.
