Description

Spanish Lyric Theatre Inc.

Spanish Lyric Theatre Inc. is a non-profit arts organization established in Tampa, Florida. It is recognized as the oldest community theatre in the Tampa Bay area and is notable for being the only bilingual theatre in the city, offering performances in both Spanish and English.

History

The theatre was founded in 1959 by Rene Gonzalez, who staged the first Zarzuela production while a student at the University of Tampa. Initially, performances were held at the Dome Theatre in Plant Hall before moving to the Centro Asturiano in Ybor City. Over the years, the theatre has undergone name changes: it started as "The Spanish Little Theatre" and was officially incorporated as Spanish Lyric Theatre in 1983 to emphasize its musical theatre focus[1][2][3].

Programs and Performances

Spanish Lyric Theatre is committed to celebrating and preserving Hispanic/Latino culture through the performing arts. It produces a variety of shows, including Zarzuelas (a traditional Spanish form of musical theatre), Broadway-style musicals, and a Heritage Concert Series. These performances aim to provide diverse and high-quality entertainment that transcends language and cultural barriers, appealing to both Hispanic and broader audiences[1][3].

Management and Leadership

Rene Gonzalez led the theatre for over five decades before retiring in 2014. Subsequently, Cyndee Dornblaser took over as Board President and Producing Artistic Director, and JL Rey was appointed Artistic Director in 2021[1][3].

Fiscal Condition and Sustainability

Spanish Lyric Theatre operates with a small overhead, ensuring cash flow for program needs. Despite fluctuations in arts funding, the organization has maintained fiscal stability and continues to seek diverse funding sources to sustain its activities[1][4].

Impact and Legacy

With over 1,000 productions, Spanish Lyric Theatre has had a profound impact on Tampa's cultural scene, fostering community engagement and cultural preservation. It remains dedicated to deepening Latino heritage and serving the diverse Tampa Bay community through inclusive and diverse theatrical experiences[2][5].
