American College of Parliamentary Lawyers
Overview

The American College of Parliamentary Lawyers (ACPL) is a nonprofit professional association of lawyers from the United States and Canada. Founded in 2007, the organization aims to provide a platform for the exchange of knowledge among legal professionals to advance parliamentary law. This enables the effective application of parliamentary procedure in various voluntary organizations.

Purpose

ACPL advocates for the use of parliamentary law, which refers to the procedures used by deliberative assemblies to make decisions in meetings. This is distinct from legal matters typically handled by lawyers. The organization seeks to bridge these two fields by fostering a community of lawyers who are also skilled in parliamentary procedures.

Membership

To be eligible for membership in the ACPL, an individual must be a lawyer admitted to practice law before the highest court of a state. Members are expected to be both legal professionals and knowledgeable in parliamentary law, often utilizing resources like Robert's Rules of Order Newly Revised (RONR).

Activities

ACPL conducts educational sessions for its members and the broader parliamentary community. These sessions focus on providing relevant and timely information, aligning with the organization's mission to promote democratic principles of self-governance in voluntary organizations.

Governance and Structure

The ACPL operates as a non-profit corporation. Its activities are designed to support its objectives through various programs that enhance understanding and application of parliamentary law.

External Associations

The ACPL is associated with other organizations that focus on the study and implementation of parliamentary procedure, such as the American Institute of Parliamentarians and the National Association of Parliamentarians. These relationships further facilitate the exchange of knowledge and best practices in the field.

Tax Status
