In 2012, Dr. Nora J. Baladerian, Director of the Disability and Abuse Project, conducted the first ever national survey on abuse and people with Disabilities in conjunction with the ARC of Riverside County. The 2012 survey, identified that more than 7 in 10 people with disabilities say they’ve been abused. The 2012 survey is believed to be the largest survey of its kind, over 7,200 people with disabilities, family members, advocates, service providers and other professionals were polled between May and October 2012. Abuse is a widespread problem affecting individuals with disabilities worldwide, and the experiences and voices of survivors often go unheard due to various barriers and stigma. The 2025 survey aims to deepen our understanding of the prevalence of abuse among individuals with disabilities, as well as those who are deaf, hard of hearing, or deaf-blind in the United States. The findings will inform important research, interventions, and policy recommendations. Additionally, the survey data will be published as open source for all advocates and scholars to access and utilize. For almost 2 years Dr. Baladerian, The Natalie Project, Arizonia State University and selected professional have been working on updating the survey. The new survey will assess prevalence, examine types of abuse, the impact of abuse, identify gaps and support needs. The updated survey is now available in English & Spanish.
