Join us tomorrow (Wednesday) for our monthly Knitting Group meeting! And as always, crocheters, embroiderers, and needlepointers welcome too! Come enjoy some crafting and community with others who also like creating. (fb)

On this date, April 5, 1842, the first town meeting was held in what would later become the community of Fort Atkinson. At the time, residents were still part of the township of Koshkonong. At that first meeting, the attendees including Charles Rockwell, Milo Jones, Chester May, and George Marston, raised $100 for town expenses such as road improvements and maintenance. This meeting was the first step in forming a municipal government. As our community grew, Fort Atkinson would later become a village (1860) and city (1878). The attendees at this first meeting worked together by establishing rules that improved conditions for all residents, regardless of their social standing or background. Just like then, we are all part of this community and thankful for those who helped to establish the unique and active city we have today. This map is from 1841 and displays the early outline of our current Main Street district. The "Military Road" on the map is now Main Street and "Bark River Road" is Milwaukee Avenue.
