The Bronx Freedom Fund

Fighting to #EndMoneyBail, and the criminalization of race + poverty in NYC. Thousands of people languish in New York Cityjails each day because they can't pay bail as lowas a few hundred dollars. In the Bronx, nearly 90percent of those who have bail set between $50and $2,000 can't afford to secure their release. As aresult, they spend weeks and months behind bars, where they face the devastating consequences ofincarceration—many lose their jobs, housing, andeven custody of their children. These people have not been convicted of any crime. They are in jail simply for being poor.Winner of the 2015 National Criminal JusticeAssociation's Outstanding Program Award for theNortheast Region, The Bronx Freedom Fund grewout of a determination to confront this pervasiveinjustice. We provide bail for those who can'tafford it, helping clients avoid the life-shatteringconsequences of jail time, return home to theirfamilies, and fight their cases from a position offreedom.

Founded in 2007 The Bronx Freedom Fund was the first of its kind effort to disrupt the injustice of cash bail in New York City by posting bail for thousands of lowincome New Yorkers incarcerated before trial. Through its decadelong effort to transform pretrial justice in New York The Bronx Freedom Fund reunited thousands of families separated by bail while pioneering the revolving bail fund model as a tool in the fight against mass incarceration and the criminalization of race and poverty. On January 1 2020 after more than a decade The Bronx Freedom Fund stopped posting bails in light of long overdue reforms that ended cash bail for the majority of cases where charitable bail funds can provide assistance under state law. However in light of subsequently enacted rollbacks The Bronx Freedom Fund once again stands ready to resume offering bail assistance.
