Organization of Women in International Trade
Organization of Women in International Trade
The Organization of Women in International Trade (OWIT) is a global nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering women to participate in and lead international trade initiatives. Founded in the mid-1980s, OWIT officially established itself in 1989 with a vision to create a network that fosters international trade opportunities and supports the advancement of women in business.
Mission and Values
OWIT's mission is centered around uniting women globally to promote international trade and business leadership. The organization values knowledge sharing, mentoring, networking, and cooperation with peers to stay at the forefront of trade and technological developments.
History
The initial chapters of OWIT developed independently across the United States, driven by the need for women to connect and advance their careers in international trade. The organization held its inaugural board meeting in Los Angeles in 1989 and has since grown significantly.
Activities and Chapters
OWIT has expanded to include 25 chapters across eight countries, facilitating a diverse network of over 3,000 members. Chapters host various events such as networking meetings, educational seminars, and webinars. They also offer scholarships and support charitable organizations, providing members with a broad range of experiences and opportunities.
OWIT annually recognizes a Woman of the Year, celebrating accomplished businesswomen who inspire others to pursue careers in international trade. The organization further supports minority women-owned businesses through collaborative efforts and resources.
Global Impact
Through its chapters and partnerships, OWIT plays a significant role in fostering ongoing trade relationships within and between global communities. Its global reach enables members to tap into new business opportunities and expand their professional networks internationally.
