Northeast Organic Farmers Association of Connecticut Inc.
Overview
The Northeast Organic Farmers Association of Connecticut Inc., commonly referred to as CT NOFA, is a Chapter of the Northeast Organic Farming Association (NOFA). It operates as a 501(c) nonprofit organization with a mission to promote and support organic agriculture, organic food, and organic land care in Connecticut.
History
The Connecticut chapter of NOFA was founded in 1982 by Bill Duesing, marking it as one of the early formal chapters within the NOFA structure. CT NOFA's establishment was part of a broader movement by the Northeast Organic Farming Association, which began in 1971 with its initial gatherings in New Hampshire and Vermont. Over the years, CT NOFA has grown to be a significant player in the state's organic agriculture sector.
Objectives and Activities
CT NOFA's objectives include ensuring the growth and viability of organic agriculture, food, and land care practices. To achieve this, the organization sponsors various events and initiatives:
- Conferences: CT NOFA hosts conferences, notably the Winter Conference, which features workshops, awards, and keynote addresses on organic farming, seed saving, and social justice issues.
- Education and Resources: It provides educational resources, including publications and podcasts, aimed at supporting farmers and gardeners in adopting organic practices.
- Advocacy: CT NOFA advocates for environmental rights and policies that support organic agriculture, often partnering with other organizations and state leaders.
Impact
As the academic chapter of NOFA, CT NOFA has a strong emphasis on organic lawn and land care, working closely with neighboring chapters like Massachusetts. Its efforts extend the principles of organic farming to broader land management practices, making it a key force in promoting sustainable living in densely populated areas.
Membership
CT NOFA offers membership to individuals, farms, and families committed to organic practices. Members benefit from access to specialized resources, opportunities for networking, and participation in decision-making processes within the organization.

News

One of CT NOFA’s major initiatives over the past two years has been TOPP, the Transition to Organic Partnership Program. We are happy to announce that USDA has decided to unfreeze the critical funding that makes the program possible and that we will continue moving the program forward to help Connecticut farmers shift to certified organic growing practices. We’re also happy to share the 2024 TOPP Impact Report, detailing the program’s successes, so far. Nationally, TOPP has resulted in 3,800+ new organic farming operations with 260,000+ acres of land newly managed under certified organic practices! Visit our website to read the report and learn more about how CT NOFA is involved with the program. (fb)
