Grand Lodge of Tennessee

The Grand Lodge of Tennessee, officially known as the Grand Lodge of the Ancient and Honorable Fraternity of Free and Accepted Masons of the State of Tennessee, is a nonprofit organization and the main governing body of Freemasonry within Tennessee. It was established on December 27, 1813, by representatives from nine Masonic lodges operating within the state at that time[2].

Formation

Freemasonry in Tennessee began in 1789 when St. Tammany Lodge #1 was organized in Nashville under dispensation from the Grand Lodge of North Carolina. This lodge received its full charter from the Grand Lodge of North Carolina in January 1796, later changing its name to Harmony Lodge #1 in November 1800. Other early lodges included Tennessee Lodge #2 and Greeneville Lodge #3[2].

Development

The Grand Lodge of Tennessee was formed after a convention held in Knoxville, where representatives from various Masonic lodges resolved to establish a Grand Lodge for the state. This was following the Grand Lodge of North Carolina's decision to release its jurisdiction over Tennessee, allowing local Masons to govern themselves[2]. Thomas Claiborne was elected as the first Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Tennessee[2].

Mission and Activities

The Grand Lodge of Tennessee oversees the activities of its constituent lodges across the state. It aims to promote the values of Freemasonry, such as brotherly love, relief, and truth, and supports charitable and community projects. The organization also maintains a significant historical presence, with its Grand Lodge Building in Nashville housing a Masonic library, museum, and auditorium[4].

Membership and Structure

By 2020, the Grand Lodge of Tennessee had a reported membership of 33,200 Master Masons[2]. The organization is structured with various bodies, including local Masonic lodges, appendant organizations like the Scottish Rite and York Rite, and concordant bodies such as the Shriners and the Order of the Eastern Star.

Charity Work

The Grand Lodge of Tennessee and its associated bodies engage in numerous charitable initiatives. This includes support for Masonic homes and orphanages, relief efforts for natural disasters, and educational programs. The Masonic Widows and Orphans Fund and Home, established in the late 19th century, reflects the organization's long-standing commitment to caring for members and their families[5].

Challenges and Evolution

Throughout its history, Freemasonry in Tennessee has faced challenges such as anti-Masonic sentiment in the early 19th century and the impacts of the American Civil War. However, the Grand Lodge has continued to evolve and adapt, maintaining its role as a central authority in Tennessee Freemasonry while observing traditional Masonic principles[5].
