Optimist International
Optimist International is a global non-profit organization focused on community service and youth development. With its international headquarters in St. Louis, Missouri, United States, it comprises almost 3,000 clubs and over 80,000 members in more than 20 countries.
History
Founded at a convention in Louisville, Kentucky, in 1919, Optimist International united various local and regional clubs, the first of which was established in Buffalo, New York, in 1911. The first official charter of the international organization was awarded to the club in Downtown Indianapolis, Indiana, which had been founded in 1916.
Mission and Vision
The organization's mission is to provide hope and positive vision, bringing out the best in youth, communities, and its members. The vision is to be recognized worldwide as the premier volunteer organization valuing all children and helping them develop to their full potential. The purposes include developing optimism as a philosophy of life, promoting civic affairs, inspiring respect for the law, and aiding the development of youth.
Programs and Initiatives
Optimist International sponsors several programs focused on youth development:
- Scholarship Contests: The organization offers three scholarship contests—the Communication Contest for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, the Essay Contest, and the Oratorical Contest—for students pursuing higher education.
- Junior Optimist International: Designed for youth from elementary school through high school, Junior Optimist International encourages "kids helping kids" and offers programs tailored for different age groups.
- Community Projects: Optimist Clubs engage in various community service initiatives, including supporting local schools, sponsoring youth athletic leagues, and promoting youth safety.
Organizational Philosophy and Structure
The organization is guided by the Optimist Creed, adopted in 1922, which outlines principles for living an optimistic life. Each Optimist Club operates autonomously, allowing them to tailor their service initiatives to meet local needs. This flexibility enables Optimists to address a wide range of community issues, fostering the development of youth and promoting community well-being.
Diversity and Inclusion
Optimist International emphasizes diversity and inclusion, recognizing the importance of addressing racism and discrimination. The organization supports initiatives to increase diversity within its leadership and encourages dialogue within clubs and communities to build a more equitable world.
