Fulton County Historical Society (New York)

The Fulton County Historical Society (FCHS) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to acquiring, preserving, and promoting the history of Fulton County, New York. Established to serve as a custodian of the county’s heritage, the Society conveys the significance of local history to the public through tours, exhibits, educational programs, and research initiatives.

History

The organization was formed on May 22, 1952. Historical records indicate that an earlier county historical society existed as far back as March 20, 1891, based on a certificate of incorporation discovered at the Gloversville Free Library. Initially, the Society did not have a permanent headquarters and held meetings at Gloversville High School. It received its absolute charter from the New York State Board of Regents on April 28, 1972.

The FCHS and its museum are housed in the former Kingsboro school building, which was constructed in 1900 on the site of the Kingsboro Academy. The Academy had been established in 1831 as a private school by Rev. Elisha Yale and transitioned to a public elementary school in 1863. After a new elementary school building was completed in 1972, FCHS was granted use of the old Kingsboro school as a museum, which opened to the public in March 1973.
