The John Gloucester Memorial Presbyterian Church Scholarship Fund

The John Gloucester Memorial Presbyterian Church Scholarship Fund is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing educational scholarships, with a focus on supporting individuals from underrepresented communities. It is affiliated with the Presbytery of Boston within the Presbyterian Church (USA).

History and Background

The John Gloucester Memorial Presbyterian Church Scholarship Fund was established following the closure of the John Gloucester Memorial Presbyterian Church in Boston in 2000. The fund serves as a memorial to the church's ministry and legacy, particularly honoring Rev. John Gloucester, the first ordained African American Presbyterian minister in the United States. Rev. Gloucester was a pioneering figure in the African American Presbyterian community, having founded the First African Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia in 1807.

Mission

The fund's primary mission is to support educational opportunities for young individuals, prioritizing those who meet specific criteria such as being members or descendants of the John Gloucester Memorial Presbyterian Church, residents of Mission Hill in Boston, members of the Presbyterian Church (USA), and individuals of color. Preference is also given to those who demonstrate academic ability, leadership, citizenship, and a desire to attend a Presbyterian educational institution. Knowledge of the church's history is considered a positive attribute.

Scholarship Program

The fund awards scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $3,000 to undergraduate students. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 and be accepted or enrolled at a college or university. The selection process emphasizes inclusivity and equal opportunity, aiming to support deserving students who embody the values of the Presbyterian community.

Financial Information

As a registered 501(c)(3) organization, donations to the fund are tax-deductible. The fund operates without executive compensation, professional fundraising fees, or other salaries. It derives its revenue primarily from investment income and sales of assets, maintaining significant assets with no reported liabilities.

Community Impact

By focusing on educational support, the John Gloucester Memorial Presbyterian Church Scholarship Fund contributes to the empowerment of underrepresented communities. It fosters a sense of belonging and connection to heritage among recipients while promoting academic excellence and community leadership. Through its commitment to inclusivity and support for historically disadvantaged groups, the fund plays a crucial role in nurturing future leaders and engaged citizens.
