Germantown Country Dancers

Germantown Country Dancers (GCD) is a nonprofit educational organization dedicated to the enjoyment, teaching, study, preservation, and evolution of English and American folk dances. The organization is affiliated with the Country Dance & Song Society (CDSS).

Overview

GCD focuses on community dancing, particularly English Country Dancing, which emphasizes interaction among dancers through changing partners and social engagement. The dances are designed to be accessible, with new dancers welcomed at most events, where steps are taught and prompted. Dancers are encouraged to wear flat-soled shoes, and participation does not require a partner.

Events

GCD offers regular dance events:

• Wednesday English Country Dance: Held year-round, these events are open to all skill levels and take place at the Merion Friends Meeting Activities Building.
• First Saturday Workshops and Dances: Intended for intermediate and experienced dancers, these events include afternoon workshops and evening dances at Summit Presbyterian Church in Mt. Airy.
• Mt. Airy Barn Dance: Held on the first Sundays of November to April, this event features old-time dances suitable for all ages at Summit Church.

Governance and Values

The organization has formalized a code of conduct to maintain a positive and respectful community environment. They also implement COVID guidelines to ensure safety and health among participants. The organization is governed by a board of directors and various committees focused on different aspects of its operations.

Membership and Support

Germantown Country Dancers allows individuals to become members, supporting the continuation of dance events and educational activities. Members receive benefits, including guaranteed admission to certain events upon timely registration.

Affiliations and Community Impact

As an affiliate of the Country Dance & Song Society, GCD participates in broader dance communities and events, such as the CDSS Executive Board visits. This affiliation enhances the organization's role in preserving and promoting traditional dances.
