First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association of the USA (FCSLA)

The First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association of the USA, also known as FCSLA Life, is a fraternal benefit society founded in Cleveland, Ohio on January 1, 1892. It was established by Anna Hurban and eight other Slovak women with the encouragement of Father Stephen Furdek. The organization aimed to provide death and injury benefits to protect families from the hazards of industrial labor, a crucial need among Slovak immigrant communities at the time.

History

FCSLA was established during a period when women's roles in society were limited, and it marked a significant effort by women to create a safety net for families. By the end of 1892, the society had grown to 95 members with $212 in assets. Over the years, FCSLA expanded rapidly, reaching 1,859 members by 1899. The organization officially chartered in Ohio in 1899, enabling it to operate under the state's fraternal code.

By 1927, FCSLA celebrated its 35th anniversary with a large parade in Cleveland, marking significant growth and recognition. The society weathered the Great Depression by providing waivers for destitute families and experienced significant leadership under figures like Helen Kocan and later Elizabeth Lipovsky. In 1945, the Cleveland Slovak Union merged with FCSLA, further consolidating its strength.

Development and Impact

In the latter half of the 20th century, FCSLA continued to evolve, changing its name to the First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association (FCSLA) to avoid confusion with labor unions. The organization has been active in community service, cultural promotion, and philanthropy. It has supported Slovak heritage and Catholic values while providing financial security through life insurance and annuities.

Under the leadership of National President Cynthia M. Maleski, FCSLA experienced unprecedented growth, with its insurance in force and assets exceeding $1 billion. The organization has maintained an A- (Excellent) rating by A.M. Best and has expanded its footprint by opening new branches across strategic states.

Recent Developments

FCSLA Life recently celebrated its 125th anniversary, marking a legacy that spans over a century. The organization continues to support community activities and charitable causes, including the Anna Hurban Scholarship Program. Cynthia M. Maleski, who served as National President since 2012, announced her retirement in early 2025, passing the leadership to Michael J. Agan.
