The edge may be a dangerous place, but it’s also a place of creativity and hope. For London Williams, it’s a place to imagine other worlds. His installation uses the language of painting, theater, and film, to place us in a timeless utopia, where his Butch Queen is free to express himself on his own terms. Placed in an empty stage, Williams leaves it to us to imagine for whom he is performing. His work is a reminder that the edge is also a jumping off place, that offers the possibility of something new—if you’re brave enough to take the leap. For Ajunie Virk, discomfort is a source of humor. Faced with anxiety, her response is to play. In the video, The Green Ones Are the Real Fruit, Ajunie Virk populates a digital world with dozens of miniature versions of herself, on a mythic quest to cultivate the color blue. Her work is also meant to disorient the viewer—a roller-coaster ride through meandering daydreams.
