Cass County Historical Society
The Cass County Historical Society is a U.S. nonprofit organization based in Cass County, Indiana. The society was established in 1907 with the aim of preserving and promoting the historical heritage of Cass County.
History and Mission
The Cass County Historical Society was organized during a meeting of the Citizens Club at Library Hall on February 12, 1907. Its primary mission is to collect, preserve, and exhibit artifacts that reflect the cultural and historical significance of Cass County. The society achieves this by maintaining museums and historical sites where various exhibits are showcased to connect current generations with their past.
Museums and Exhibits
The Long Home Museum is one of the main facilities operated by the society. It is located in a historic Italianate house built in 1853 and features thousands of artifacts, including paintings, river and railroad artifacts, military uniforms, Native American items, antique toys, and more. A two-story log cabin, originally built around 1863 near Galveston, Indiana, was reconstructed next to the Long Home Museum in 1974.
In addition to the Long Home Museum, the society acquired the Cass County Museum in 2019. This facility is being developed to house expanded exhibits, including a 1920 ReVere Tourer automobile, American mastodon fossils, and a reimagined Main Street Shops exhibit.
Accessibility and Initiatives
The society is working to improve accessibility at its sites to ensure that visitors with mobility difficulties can fully experience the exhibits. It offers free admission for children and students at the Long Home Museum and hosts activities and exhibitions throughout the year.
