63 years ago today, the Freedom Riders were attacked by white mobs while disembarking their bus in Montgomery, all while police watched on. The Riders were a group of mixed race and mostly young-adult activists, calling for an end to transportation segregation in the South. The activists knew what they were up against, having come down from Nashville to continue the protest after the previous group of Riders were hospitalized from being beaten in Birmingham and nearly burned alive by mobs in Anniston. But they got on the bus anyway. Every year, this anniversary serves as a reminder that the pursuit of justice sometimes requires us to do hard, brave things.
