Urban Appalachian Council
Overview
The Urban Appalachian Council (UAC) was a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for Appalachian migrants and their descendants in the Greater Cincinnati area. It aimed to promote positive images of urban Appalachian people and their heritage while dispelling negative stereotypes. The council focused on empowering individuals within these communities by strengthening families, developing community resources, and reforming systems affecting their lives[1].
History
Efforts to support urban Appalachians in Cincinnati began in the 1960s, particularly through the work of Ernie Mynatt and the Cincinnati Mayor's Friendly Relations Committee. In 1974, the Urban Appalachian Council was formally established with Michael Maloney as its first director[1]. Dr. Frank Foster of Xavier University played a significant role in organizing conferences that helped urban Appalachian leaders develop an agenda for action, which the UAC implemented[1].
Programs and Initiatives
The UAC's programs were centered around education, leadership development, access to human services, employment and training, especially for youth, and preserving Appalachian culture and identity. It collaborated with local groups to establish adult literacy programs, develop job sites in Appalachian neighborhoods, and operate employment readiness programs. The council also organized conferences and workshops for professionals working with urban Appalachians and advocated for policies benefiting low-income urban Appalachians. Additionally, it promoted Appalachian arts, music, and cultural programming[1].
Legacy and Transition
After four decades of service, the UAC's operational components were absorbed by other local organizations in 2014. The organization was reorganized into the Urban Appalachian Community Coalition (UACC), which continues as an advocacy coalition for Cincinnati area Appalachians[2][3]. The UACC maintains the legacy of the UAC by focusing on promoting awareness of urban Appalachian contributions and addressing community concerns[2].
