Phi Delta Chi Pharmacy Fraternity Inc.
Overview
Phi Delta Chi Pharmacy Fraternity Inc., a nonprofit organization, is a coed professional fraternity dedicated to the advancement of the pharmaceutical profession. Founded on November 2, 1883, at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan, it aims to foster a fraternal spirit among its members while promoting leadership, service, and scholarship in pharmacy.
History
Originally formed as Phi Chi Fraternity, the organization adopted the name Phi Delta Chi in 1909, with the change ratified in 1910. Initially, membership was restricted to men in pharmacy and chemistry. However, during the Great Depression, the fraternity focused exclusively on pharmacy by 1950. Phi Delta Chi was instrumental in establishing the Rho Chi International Honor Society for Pharmacy in 1922 and later supported the founding of Phi Lambda Sigma, a pharmacy leadership society, in 1965.
Development
In response to Title IX, Phi Delta Chi became a co-ed organization in 1976. The fraternity has expanded significantly, with over 70 collegiate chapters established across the United States. Its growth aligns with the expansion of pharmacy education in the 1990s and 2000s.
