Little League Baseball Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that administers local youth baseball and softball leagues throughout the United States and worldwide. Founded in 1939 by Carl E. Stotz in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, it is the largest organized youth sports organization globally, offering programs for children aged 4 to 16.
History
Little League began with Carl Stotz, an oil clerk who started playing catch with his nephews, leading to the creation of a three-team league in Williamsport. The first game was played on June 6, 1939. Initially, the teams were sponsored by local businesses for $30 each. By 1946, the organization expanded to 12 leagues within Pennsylvania, and by 1947, the first league outside Pennsylvania was established in New Jersey. Little League was incorporated on October 10, 1950, and Stotz served as its first commissioner until 1955.
Structure
Little League is structured in three main levels:
- Local League: Autonomous organizations that operate within community boundaries. Each league is managed by a board of volunteer directors and offers programs tailored to local needs.
- District: A collection of 10 to 20 local leagues overseen by a District Administrator, who ensures compliance with Little League rules and coordinates tournaments.
- Region and International: These levels provide support and resources to local leagues. Little League International is headquartered in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania, and oversees the global operation of the program.
Programs
Little League offers various divisions, including Baseball, Softball, and the Challenger Division for children with disabilities. The organization emphasizes character development through sports, promoting values such as character, courage, and loyalty through its motto.
Notable Features
- Awards: Offers several awards to recognize outstanding athletes, volunteers, and parents.
- International Presence: With teams in more than 80 countries, Little League is the first global organized youth sports program.
